To promote compassionate care, perpetuate the bond between animals and humans
and end the destruction of healthy adoptable pets so that every animal finds a
loving home.
Who We Are
On behalf of the
orphaned animals that we serve, thank you for the opportunity to
acquaint you with our life saving organization.
Located between two of the fastest growing cities in Montana, Whitefish and
Kalispell, the Humane Society of Northwest Montana is home of the
Charlotte Edkins Animal Adoption Center.
Our
facility which opened its doors to the general public on July 1, 2004 sits on
fourteen acres and it is built in the shape of a horseshoe. Our original
architectural design resembled a rectangle and was approximately 10,000 square
feet in size. Due to budget constraints at the time of construction however, we
had to sacrifice the amount of kennel space for dogs and decrease overall
dimensions. After completion of our cost-cutting concessions of approximately
3,000 square feet in the final build-out, the result was 39 kennels for cats and
17 kennels for dogs.
Board of Directors
Governed by a Board of Directors, HSNWMT is a private, non-profit 501 (c)(3)
limited admission, no-kill organization that focuses on finding caring, loving
homes for orphaned cats and dogs and ending the destruction of healthy adoptable
pets. Our Board of Directors consists of Flathead Valley residents who are
concerned about animal welfare and who live and work in the area. The HSNWMT
staff consists of a dedicated team of animal care and administrative
professionals.
As strong supporters
of spaying and neutering
and pet identification,
all cats and dogs that
are adopted from the
Charlotte Edkins Animal
Adoption Center are
spayed or neutered and
microchipped prior to
adoption, including
kittens and puppies.

Building the Dream
It's
hard to believe that 2009 marks the fifth anniversary of our animal adoption
center. It seems like only yesterday that we marveled at our new bricks and
mortar. Today, like then, we rely on community support to realize the dream that
every orphaned animal finds a loving home. A dream brought to reality by
visionary benefactors who had the courage of their conviction to save animals
and make the dream become a reality.
The realization of our dream for an adoption center began in the early winter
months of 2002 with a generous donation from a family of long-time supporters.
In the months that pursued, we broke ground in June 2003. Although our building
was completed in 2004, it was our visionary friends who once again recognized
the need to eliminate some residual construction debt in 2005 and spearheaded
the single most successful, private fundraising event ever held in Montana. In
appreciation for their generosity, the Humane Society building was dedicated in
memory of Charlotte Edkins, a cherished mother and animal lover. Since that time
the Charlotte Edkins Animal Adoption Center has been privileged to preserve
Board Member Emeritus Claire Wilson's legacy. We respectfully pay homage to
Claire's memory and honor her life and love for animals.
In the five years that our
animal adoption center has been
in operation, over 1,500 animals
have been adopted and given a
second chance for a forever
home. In addition to
facilitating pet adoptions and
providing temporary housing for
homeless cats and dogs, our
organization also offers
solution oriented service
programs designed to help the
community with animal welfare
education and pet ownership
assistance.
Our community service
programs are designed to reach
students and adults in the
Flathead Valley and include an
Educational Outreach Program,
Pet Food Assistance Program,
Injured Animal Fund, and
Microchip Clinics. Through our
Educational Outreach Program, we
educate hundreds of elementary
and middle school students
annually on the topics of animal
welfare and animal safety. In
conjunction with area retailers
and the Flathead Food Bank, we
distribute pet food to families
in need and to local animal
rescue groups. Our Injured
Animal Fund helps pay emergency
veterinary care expenses for pet
owners who may not otherwise be
able to seek medical treatment
for their pet. To help pet
owners permanently identify
their pets, we also offer
low-cost microchip clinics to
the general public.
Adoption Center Hours:
