Humane Society of Northwest Montana Implements Meet Your Match™

If you are thinking about adopting a pet from the Humane Society, be aware that every animal welfare adoption organization has its own policies for approving pet adoptions. Our adoption screening process is designed to ensure that each animal is placed with a responsible loving person who is prepared to make a lifelong commitment. Because of this focus, our return rate is very low. We work hard to avoid making impulsive decisions that may contribute to unforeseen problems for the pet or the adoptive family. We’ve learned the hard way that:

  • Some of the most gentle dogs must have a fenced yard or they will roam off the property
  • Some of the most well-mannered dogs are not best suited for a family with very young children
  • Some of the friendliest dogs are driven by their prey instinct and should not be homed with small animals.

The goal of the adoption screening process is to match the lifestyle, needs and expectations of the adopter with the individual dog or cat. If the process seems rigid, please know that our first priority is to secure the best match and best home for the animal. After all, when you adopt a pet you save the life of two animals – the one you adopted and the one who took his or her empty kennel. So, let’s make sure it’s a forever match!

To help in the process of making the perfect match, The Charlotte Edkins Animal Adoption Center recently implemented the ASPCA® Meet Your Match™ Program. The Meet Your Match™ Program was designed to facilitate a bond between canine and adopter because the majority of animals returned to adoption facilities usually occur in the first month following adoption. The adopters complaints usually range with reasons such as, “He’s too big”, He’s too active” or “He’s not what I was looking for”. By matching based on Canine-ality™ and personality, instead of color or breed, adopters will be better educated on how to select a pet based on the animal’s behavioral traits that meet their lifestyle and expectations.
